Combining fast processing speeds with power-saving features, the Intel Core 2 Duo processor provides greater multitasking performance by combining two independent processor cores while also reducing power requirements and saving on battery life. This Intel Core 2 Duo processor has a 2.4 GHz processor speed, speedy 1066 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and 3 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)
Buttonless Multi-Touch Trackpad
With no button on the glass trackpad, there's more room to track and click--left, right, center, and everywhere in between. Without a separate button, the trackpad gives your hands plenty of room to move on the large, silky glass surface. It also incorporates Multi-Touch gestures--including swipe, pinch, rotate, and four-finger swipe. And it also now supports inertial scrolling, an intuitive way to scroll through large photo libraries, lengthy documents and long web sites.
Powered by the NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics card, the Mac mini allows you to view flawless video in full screen HD and play the latest games with fast frame rate. It's a great match to editing video masterpieces with iMovie and managing your photos in iPhoto, and it comes with 256 MB of DDR3 SDRAM that's shared with main memory.

Apple Drops EPEAT - Apple Products Now Essentially Becoming Disposable?

A few days ago PCMag reported that "that Apple has officially withdrawn its 39 products from EPEAT certification – that's the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool, a program that awards products with "gold," "silver," or "bronze" classification based on how well they meet a variety of environmental-themed criteria including recyclability, energy consumption, and environmental impact."In order to make the case of the new 15-inch "retina" MacBook Pro as slim as possible, did Apple pretty make it impossible to replace the battery? At over 100K, well that is a lot for a disposable product. It appears to be because Apple's current designs for the iPad 3 and "retina" MacBook Pro use glue to affix the battery and other components to the case, making it not feasible to recycle the case and the battery.iPad's were always hard to repair. With a glued battery the new iPad "3" is even harder. This decision by Apple must have come after some thought. Without EPEAT certification, it means US Federal agencies won't be able to buy Apple products. This was not a big issue because the US Government and US Army have selected the Android platform for their own use. The ability to be able to modify the Android operating system to fit their own needs was no doubt a big reason for the adoption of Android by the US Government and military agencies.
While States and Cities are not required to only buy EPEAT certified products, the Wall Street Journal reports City of San Francisco has also said it will no longer be buying Apple products because of Apple's withdrawal from EPEAT certification. The City of San Francisco adopted EPEAT certification as mandatory in 2007. The main reason to drop out of EPEAT would be for lower production cost coupled with of consumer demand for thinner and lighter devices. Using glue, rather than mounting parts, makes it easier and cheaper to achieve this. This is bad for the environment, and bad for the consumer. As Phone Arena points out, by "gluing the battery, Apple makes it extremely hard to repair its latest products, which means that it basically treats them as disposable electronics with lifetimes largely limited by the lifetime of their battery." In fairness, I doubt if it is only Apple that is making its some of its devices disposable in the interest of lower manufacturing cost. There is no EPEAT certification for smartphones and tablets. You, the consumer will decide if this becomes the norm.

Apple is Not Sony

I'm not sure what I disagree with more, Forrester Research's glib prediction that Apple will be the next Sony (link), or the assumption that it's even possible to predict something that complicated.  Let me start with the second issue.

The longer I've been in the tech industry, the more I've come to realize that predictions about it are usually worthless.

Leave aside the big failed dreams like nuclear-powered aircraft (link) and the transatlantic train tunnel (link).  Even products that seem relatively straightforward can be very hard to predict.  The industry thought tablets and e-books were imminent for at least a decade before someone got them right, and we're still waiting for micro fuel cells and flexible screens.

There are so many moving parts in the industry, and success depends on so many tiny details of execution, that it's basically impossible to predict even things that look, in retrospect, like they were inevitable.

If it's that hard to predict the fate of individual technologies that have been studied for decades, imagine the difficulty of predicting the fate of an entire company made up of thousands of people and numerous product lines.  What you can do is predict what could happen, and even take a guess at the odds.  We've all been collectively doing that lately with RIM and Nokia.  But even to make that kind of prediction you need to look at companies' management, products, customer base, financial status, and technologies, plus do an assessment of its competitors.  Forrester did none of that for Apple.  Instead it drew a simple little equation, based on sociological theory:  Apple was led by a charismatic founder, as was Sony.  After Sony lost its charismatic founder, the company declined.  Apple has now lost its charismatic founder, so it'll decline too.

Forrester is an excellent research firm, and I have huge respect for its quantitative market research.  But in this case I'm not buying its prediction, for a couple of reasons:

First, although it's accurate to say that Sony declined after the loss of Akio Morita, it's not clear that the company's decline was caused solely or even primarily by the loss of Morita.  Here's a chart from Yahoo Finance of Sony's stock price since 1985:

The red arrow marks 1994, the year when Morita stepped down after suffering a stroke.  Ignore the ridiculous spike in the middle caused by the Japanese economic bubble; the important point is that at its peak in 2007, 13 years after Morita left the company, Sony's stock price was double what it was when he left.  The PlayStation, Sony's most vibrant tech product today, was started under Morita but is generally credited to Ken Kutaragi and his sponsor Norio Ohga, the man who succeeded Morita.

I have no doubt at all that Akio Morita was central to the building of Sony.  But I think its decline stems from a lot more than just his departure.

In a similar vein, I am not at all persuaded that the success of Apple under Steve Jobs can be credited entirely to his presence.  I worked there for almost all the time he was gone, and Apple without Steve had a lot of strengths -- a strong engineering team, a strong product management culture, great industrial designers and artists and marketing gurus, and a beloved brand with fanatical users.  What the company didn't have, I think, was leadership capable of making all those strengths mesh.  Some of Apple's work was wonderful (the Macintosh II and the PowerBook computers come to mind), and some of it was completely forgettable.  Management was not able to get the company consistently united around a single set of long-term goals.  Instead the company lurched from initiative to initiative, some of them pushed by outside consultants, many underfunded or contradictory.  Apple's culture of passive resistance, created in part by Steve Jobs himself during his first time at the company, made the problems worse.

What Jobs brought to Apple when he returned, more than anything else, was focus.  He committed Apple to a relatively narrow set of initiatives, and made sure everyone in the company got behind them.  That let Apple's existing strengths shine through to the market.  Jobs was able to rescue Apple because it was only partially broken.

Forrester's article depicts Apple under Jobs as a company of followers who waited to be given their marching orders from on high.  That theory sounds reasonable if you don't know anyone who works at Apple, but I do.  The folks I know there are team players, but by no means are they passive followers.  I think the real risk is not that Apple without Jobs will drift, but that it may revert to its old bad habits.  Will the company's management team continue to work together, or will it fall into passive resistance?  Can Tim Cook enforce discipline without alienating the big talents (and big egos) scattered throughout the company?  Do the managers themselves recognize the need to cooperate in order to keep Apple on top?

Forrester can't know the answer to that question.  Neither do I.  Yes, at some point Apple will decline; nothing lasts forever.  But unless somebody develops the ability to read minds, we can't predict when Apple will come apart.  And in the tech industry, if you don't know when, you don't know anything.

If you'll forgive me for a brief commercial message, I wanted to let you know that we just de-cloaked Zekira, the software project that I've been working on for more than a year.  Zekira is an app that helps you recall the context around any bit of information in your life -- a name, meeting, file, etc.  You use it to answer questions like "how do I know this person?" and "what's the context for this meeting?"Zekira runs on Mac and Windows, and is in early beta.  It's aimed at busy professionals who are overloaded with more computer information than they can keep track of.  The more that you save old files, messages, and contacts, the more Zekira can do for you.  You can learn more about Zekira at our crowdfunding site: www.indiegogo.com/zekira   In exchange for a donation to the project, we're offering everything from beta access to Zekira to a unique "first-come, first-served" opportunity to place display advertising in Mobile Opportunity.

Amazon vs. Apple? No, it's Amazon and Apple vs. Everyone Else

To me, there's something magnificent about a well-executed product strategy.  Features and price and marketing all come together to delight a particular type of customer, and everyone wins.  The developer gets to sell a lot of products, and the users get something that improves their lives.

In the tablet market right now we have the privilege of watching two companies do great strategy, Apple and Amazon.  The press wants to label the Kindle Fire an iPad killer, but really it's the first sensible iPad counterpoint, a tablet device with its own unique design center and business model.  I don't think either one's going to kill the other, but I think together they're likely to chop up almost every other company that gets in their way.  In particular, that means Microsoft, RIM, and Google.

Let me start by talking about the new Kindle line, and then its likely impact on the market.

Two tablet paradigms

When Apple entered the tablet market, it asked "what can we do to redefine computing for tablets?"  It re-thought the user interface, application model, and an endless set of other details to create a unique new computing experience.  Apple has been rewarded with explosive sales growth.

With the Kindle line, Amazon asked a different question: "What can we do to redefine content distribution?"  The answer led it to a tablet computer, but one with very different hardware specs, user experience, and a vastly different business model.  None of the Kindles can match the iPad feature for feature (link), but they're not intended to.  At $499 and up, the iPad is a serious investment for most people, a lifestyle statement.  At $199 and down, the Kindles are impulse buys, the sort of thing people will get under Christmas trees or just buy for themselves because it looks neat and why the heck not?

Apple makes money from the sale of the iPad and its accessories, with a bit more coming from applications and content.  Given the breath-taking pricing for the Kindle line, Amazon will probably lose money on the hardware, or at best break even.  Its main profit will have to come from the sale of ebooks and movies and all sorts of other media products, plus some apps.  Those revenues may take years to fully develop, so Amazon is playing a very long game.  That's why I see Kindle as a strategy rather than just a product.  The company is betting that by subsidizing the Kindle now, it can dominate electronic media distribution for the indefinite future.

To keep iPad successful, Apple will need to continue to add wonderful new features to it, constantly refreshing the "magical" experience.  It will also continue to drive it into markets where tablet computing can make a big difference.  Apple is already making a huge push in education; some people tell me Apple has almost completely refocused its education salesforce on selling iPad to schools rather than Macs.  And there are plenty of reports of iPads moving into other verticals like aviation.

I'm sure the Kindle Fire will also show up in schools, but at heart the Kindle line is a Volkspad, priced to be the tablet thing that everyone eventually gets for basic content access.  Already about 40% of tablet owners also own e-readers according to Pew Research (link), and I expect that percentage to increase.

Over time we might see Apple and Amazon compete more directly; it all depends on how much Apple is willing to subsidize hardware to get long-term revenue from content.  There is also potential for product line conflicts -- if Apple makes a lower-priced iPad, it might cannibalize iPhone sales.  In the past Apple has tried to keep its product lines separated in price, and it hasn't used the subsidy model.  This is a very interesting test for Apple's new CEO Tim Cook, and I'm glad Steve Jobs is still on the scene to advise him.

But in the meantime, it's very likely that iPad and Kindle will coexist nicely in the market.  The losers, I think, will be everyone else trying to play in the tablet space.

Hammer and Anvil

Companies trying to sell tablets against Apple were already suffering from slow sales.  Now instead of just being pounded by the iPad hammer, they've been undercut by the Kindle anvil.  For most of them, there's no place to go.  It's very hard for me to picture how somebody like Samsung is going to get market traction with its current tablet line, and I think the RIM PlayBook, due to its size, is going to suffer against Kindle Fire.  Between slow sales of its current phones and now the PlayBook's dwindling prospects, I hope RIM has been very very careful about managing its inventory of parts and finished devices.  Otherwise it could end up with a massive inventory writedown in a couple of quarters.

I will be very interested to see what Barnes & Noble does next with its Nook Color tablet.  Nook Color is similar in many ways to Kindle Fire, but B&N was reluctant to add a lot of Android apps because it was afraid people might buy it as a tablet rather than an e-reader.  Amazon appears to have overcome this fear, and there's a danger that B&N may have let its opportunity for leadership slip away.  On the other hand, if the next Nook Color has better features than Kindle Fire, Amazon's announcement might validate B&N's product and help it sell.

And then there's Microsoft, which has a beautiful-looking new Windows 8 tablet interface coming maybe late next year.  I'm excited, I hope it'll be wonderful, but I'm starting to wonder if any customers will still be available by the time it ships.

There is still plenty of room in the market for competing tablets, but they'll need to be aimed at different usages than the iPad and Kindle.  The biggest opportunity is for a stylus-equipped business productivity tool, an info pad (link).  But none of the major hardware companies are working on that; they seem to prefer to bash their brains out competing directly with the iPad.

You're not the licensee Droid is looking for.  Google's reaction to Kindle Fire speaks volumes about its goals for Android.  Kindle Fire is based on Android, and will run Android applications.  Android has been struggling in the tablet space, so you'd expect that Google would be delighted to have Amazon on the Android bandwagon.  But you'd be wrong.  Let's look at the press release Google issued today to welcome Amazon to the Android family.  Wait a minute, there is no press release.  Okay, so let's look on the Google blog.  Nothing at all.  Maybe a tweet from Andy Rubin?  Dead silence.

The problem is that Amazon is using Android as just an OS, not using the Google-branded services and application store that Google layers on top of the OS (link).  Although Google touted the openness of Android when it was first launched, the reality is that Google is using it as a Trojan horse to force its services onto hardware.  What Amazon did with Android is very threatening to Google, and so you're not likely to hear a lot of supportive words from them.

Silken dreams.  Speaking of threats to Google, we should discuss Amazon's new Silk browser.  It supposedly integrates Amazon Web Services with the browser to produce a faster, more efficient browsing experience on Kindle Fire.  Given the inefficiencies of web browsing over the wireless networks, this is potentially a compelling innovation that also might make it possible for future Amazon tablets to browse over 3G networks using less bandwidth than competing devices.  That might lock in a structural cost advantage for Amazon's tablets.

Kindle Fire today is a WiFi only device, but I'd be very surprised if we didn't see a 3G version sometime in 2012.

Silk potentially gives Amazon a very powerful position (link).  I can picture a couple of ways it could be used to disrupt the mobile market.  First, Amazon could tie the browser to its own content services and distribute it to other hardware vendors.  Basically, it could try to make Silk the content layer on Android that Google wants to be.  This could be a good business move for Amazon, since it's not making money from the hardware anyway.

Google would hate this passionately, but with the company already under antitrust scrutiny, it would have to respond very carefully.

Amazon's other play could be to expand Silk into an enhanced platform for mobile web apps.  I've been waiting for someone to make web apps work properly on mobile, and many smart people have been getting more and more depressed about the lack of leadership in mobile web APIs (link).  Amazon has the expertise and the incentive to fill that gap.  The question is whether it wants to. I think it should, I hope it will.  If it does, Silk could become the platform for the next great generation of applications, giving Amazon enormous power in the computing market.

This will be a fun space to watch. Apple and Google will both feel pressure to respond to Silk to prevent Amazon from getting a decisive lead in mobile web apps.  Maybe just the threat of Silk will be enough to finally drive some innovation in the mobile web platform.

I may be indulging in wishful thinking, but there's a possibility that ten years from now we'll look back on Silk as the single most important thing in today's announcement.

Or not.  It depends on what Amazon's agenda is, and they're not telling.

Slouching toward Bethlehem.  One revolution I'm sure is coming is the remaking of the print publishing industry.  As I've said before (link), once about 20% of the reading public has electronic devices, an established author can make more money bypassing print and selling direct through e-readers.  I think the new Kindle line, and especially the entry-level Kindles at $99 and below, will finally push us past the 20% threshold.  It will take a couple of years to play out, but this will force the long-awaited restructuring, or destruction, of the traditional book publishing industry.

(Note:  I wrote this before I read John Gruber's take on the new Kindles.  He and I are thinking along similar lines. link )

Apple MacBook Air 13-inch (Thunderbolt) Review

Changes in the design of the Air 13-inch (Thunderbolt) is subtle. If you see a flash next to the previous mini-DisplayPort, it means that you have a MacBook Air in 2011. There are also new tags for F3 and F4, which reflects the new features Mac OS X Lion brings. F5 and F6 keys are now appointed to control the brightness of the illuminated keyboard. Even if the backlight of the keyboard was a lie of an addition, key layout is unchanged. Besides all this, see Air 13-inch (Thunderbolt), like its predecessor.

Air 13-inch (Thunderbolt) to keep slim profile, measuring 0.68 inches and tapering to the rear 0.11 inches in the front. There are other ultraportables that are almost as thin as the Samsung Series 9 ($ 1,650 list, 4 stars), the Sony VAIO VPC-Z214GX, UX21 and Asus, but they are not tapered like the MacBook Air.Apple MacBook Air 13-inch (Thunderbolt)Apple MacBook Air 13-inch (Thunderbolt) Weight remains the same 2.9 pounds. It is not the lightest on the market, ie the difference between the Sony Z214GX (2.5 pounds). Build quality is what continues to bind together the whole design, aluminum unibody structure remains the strongest and most luxurious of its kind.

The 13.3-inch widescreen reality outweighs the Apple MacBook Pro 13 inch (Thunderbolt), and many of his peers. Its brightness and sharpness is only surpassed by the number of pixels it packs in. As you can imagine, the more pixels you can pack in a screen, the most fantastic pictures, videos and watch a movie in high definition. Its 1440 by 900 pixels is higher than the series Samsung nine, the 13-inch MacBook Pro and the Toshiba Portege R835-P50X (list $ 850, 4 stars). Only Sony has a nicer Z214GX screen, with its 1600 by 900 pixels.

Many complained about Apple's move to remove the keyboard backlight is the second generation of the MacBook Air. MacBook Pro has had from the beginning, and is a feature that has made the Samsung Series 9 and Sony Z214GX very attractive from the point of view of writing. In this publication, Apple will return what it took, and writing experience, especially in low light environment, is much better. Flat-top keys blacks are not my favorites, because they do not have the depth and responsiveness than the Toshiba R835-P50X. But this I am being picky. This is the same keyboard is in the entire line of Apple laptop, and very few people have complained. Glass touchpad is not only a great laptop, but it clicks in and supports a series of multi-finger gesture. It plays an even greater importance, especially now that Mac OS X includes the IPAD-centric features lion bringing a whole new meaning by sliding and sliding.Apple MacBook Air 13-inch (Thunderbolt)Apple MacBook Air 13-inch (Thunderbolt)Apple MacBook Air 13-inch (Thunderbolt)Apple MacBook Air 13-inch (Thunderbolt)Feature

The second USB port and SD slot has been updated the main features of the previous MacBook Air, although features common to all the other phones. Ray, however, is exclusive to Apple, at least for now. It is based on data transfer called Intel Light Peak, who lives inside the mini-DisplayPort (the attributes of the physical form and the port have not changed, and you can still connect to external monitors). When connected to a beam device loans, transfer rates can reach 10Gbps. This is 21 times the speed of USB 2.0 and FireWire 400, 12 times that of FireWire 800 and twice that of USB 3.0. If lightning is orderly use of which may extend through the connection, as data moves through the PCI-Express universal suffrage. This means that any third party device can create a center that works with lightning Gigabit Ethernet, USB 3.0, DisplayPort, etc.

What other ports, the air is minimal. These two USB ports and an SD card slot and an audio interface should be covered by a series of devices that are used in a typical day. There's no Ethernet port, but many say that the Wi-Fi is more than enough. If the requirements of Internet connection are more sophisticated than the average, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 ($ 1,399 direct, 3.5 stars) and the Samsung 9 Series is the Ethernet, 802.11n Wi-Fi, WiMAX and Bluetooth.

Although expensive, flash storage (or Solid State Drive) are used for a number of reasons. One is its physical size, a flash storage module is the size of a stick of gum, an important factor in maintaining the MacBook Air is so thin it is. It is also faster, especially when the laptop wakes from sleep or cold boots. Apple calls this "instant-on" and I could not agree more. However, the capacity of 128 GB (expandable to 256 GB) seems modest compared with the hollow rotating disk drives in the Toshiba R835-P50X (640GB) and Acer Aspire 6431-AS3830TG ($ 750 street, 4 stars) ( 500 GB).

Unfortunately, ray devices are few and far between. To date, there are now two of them: the promise of hard drive and R6 Pegasus Ray of Apple.
